Reading Comprehension in English in Nursing Practice Settings

Intended Audience
Professionals and researchers in the Nursing field.
The course extends over an 8-week period. This process includes weekly online and asynchronous classes, written activities, and three synchronous sessions or defined videoconference meetings (via Zoom). Upon completing and passing each level, a digital certification is awarded.
In this course, you will be introduced to linguistic content and knowledge about the narrative organization of scientific texts in English, such as reviews, opinion articles, chapters from specialized academic books, and reviews of original research articles. Additionally, you will learn to identify the main ideas of these texts within a framework of strategic and interpretative reading. Finally, you will conclude this work by writing a brief academic review of the covered article in Spanish.
This course consists of 2 modules spanning a total of 8 weeks. Each module includes weekly online and asynchronous classes, supplemented by corresponding written assignments accessible via the virtual campus. To conclude, you will submit an integrative final project that synthesizes the work completed each week. The course also features approximately three synchronous sessions or scheduled videoconferences (via Zoom). These sessions, announced in advance, aim to foster communication among participants and facilitate collaborative content consolidation in a relaxed working environment. Upon completing and passing the course, you will receive a digital certification.

- Approach to Academic Texts in the Field of Health and Nursing Published in English
- Acquisition of reading and textual comprehension strategies.
- Recognition of paratextual components.
- Identification of textual genres: scientific journals, specialized academic books, and various textual typologies such as reviews, original articles, comments, and opinion articles (Abstracts, Original Articles, Comments, Perspectives, Reviews).
- Incorporation of General Academic Vocabulary (GAV) and Specific Discipline Vocabulary (SDV)
- Acquisition of linguistic elements essential for the comprehension of academic texts. This content represents an elementary level of English.
- Analysis of cohesion and coherence elements in texts.
- Introduction to the narrative organization of an original research article.
- Writing concise reviews in the form of abstracts that describe the topic, objectives, and main conclusions of the covered text, utilizing GAV and elements of textual coherence and cohesion in Spanish.
